Advances in Network Segmentation in the Cloud: Insights from the LANCE Platform and Machine Learning-based Load Balancing

This talk will provide a comprehensive overview of the LANCE platform, an ecosystem of cutting-edge technologies designed for innovation and experimentation on an open source, O-RAN-enabled, standalone 5G network system. The presentation will explore the innovative concept of Cloud Network Segmentation, highlighting how this approach enables the creation of multiple virtualised and isolated end-to-end network partitions over a shared physical infrastructure, providing segmentation as a service with unprecedented flexibility and efficiency. In addition, a Machine Learning-based predictive load balancing project between network segments will be addressed, which aims to optimise the distribution of resources between network segments, ensuring optimal performance and quality of service/quality of experience (QoS/QoE). Attendees will gain valuable insights into the capabilities and potential applications of the LANCE test platform, the principles and benefits of Network Segmentation in the Cloud, and how a 5G control plane powered by machine learning can improve network efficiency and performance.

Short biography

Dr. Augusto Neto is an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics (DIMAp) at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), specialising in Computer Networks and Distributed Systems. He is a senior member of the IEEE and IEEE ComSoc distinguished professor for the period 2023-2024. With three research stays, namely at UCF/USA (2023/2024) and UCF/USA (2023/2024). USA (2023/2024), the University of Aveiro/PT (2015/2016) and the Institute of Telecommunications/PT (2008/2009), and experience as a visiting professor at several prestigious institutions such as the University of Bern (Switzerland, 2016), Université Evry Val d'Essonne (France, 2015) and the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra (Portugal, 2009), Dr. Augusto Neto brings a wealth of international experience to his work. He obtained his PhD from the University of Coimbra (UC), Portugal, at the Department of Computer Engineering (DEI). Dr. Augusto Neto is author and co-author of more than 200 papers published in conference proceedings and leading journals, including 4 patents, focusing on networking and telecommunications.  He is a regular reviewer for leading journals and serves on the organising committees of major networking conferences. He coordinates and participates in research projects funded by national and international development agencies. His research interests span a broad spectrum, including 5G networks and beyond, Open RAN, cloud computing, IoT, SDN, mobile computing, space computing and smart spaces.
